Apple’s iOS 27 could let users pick third-party AI models for iPhone tasks

Apple is preparing a major shift in how iPhone users interact with AI, according to a new Bloomberg report: iOS 27 will reportedly let people choose from third-party large language models for a range of on-device tasks.
A new layer for Apple Intelligence
The feature is said to be known internally as “Extensions,” and would let users “access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand” through Apple Intelligence features including Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more. Bloomberg reports that the same capability is also planned for iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
Apple is already testing models from Google and Anthropic, the report says. It is less clear where ChatGPT fits into the mix, though the model is currently available to users, which suggests it could remain one of the choices.
TechCrunch reached out to Apple for more information.
The move would give Apple users more flexibility at a time when the company is widely seen as trailing some rivals in the AI race. Apple has not been rolling out as many new AI services as some of its peers, but it has been working to make its existing devices feel more AI-centric rather than building out a large standalone AI infrastructure business.
A strategic moment for Apple
The timing is notable as Apple prepares for a leadership transition. With long-serving CEO Tim Cook expected to step down soon, incoming top executive John Ternus will be responsible for shaping the company’s next phase, including its AI strategy.
If the report proves accurate, iOS 27 could mark a more open approach for Apple Intelligence — one that lets users decide which AI model powers the features they use most.
