Will Doppler still work in China during sensitive dates?
GFW capacity is increased around politically sensitive dates (October 1st National Day, Two Sessions, Party Congress). Most VPNs slow down or fail entirely during these windows. Doppler's VLESS-Reality protocol generally survives because it has no detectable signature, but we recommend installing a backup entry node and keeping the latest app version for maximum reliability.
Should I download Doppler before traveling to China?
Yes — strongly recommended for Android, Mac, and Windows users. Google Play is blocked, the dopplervpn.org website may be slow from inside China, and our Telegram bot is the most reliable fallback. iPhone users can download from the App Store inside China using a non-China Apple ID. Always install in advance.
Will my hotel Wi-Fi block Doppler?
Hotel and business-traveler Wi-Fi networks generally pass HTTPS traffic, which is what Doppler's VLESS-Reality protocol looks like. International chain hotels (Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, Shangri-La) work consistently. Some Chinese state-owned hotels apply additional filtering; in that case, switch to mobile data via your roaming plan.
Which Doppler server is fastest from Shanghai or Beijing?
From most of mainland China, Tokyo and Hong Kong give the lowest latency (40–80 ms ping). Singapore and Seoul are good alternatives. For users in southern China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou), Hong Kong is usually fastest. Doppler picks the best route automatically.
Is using a VPN legal for foreigners in China?
Personal VPN use by foreigners is essentially never enforced. Chinese law restricts unauthorized VPNs but enforcement targets commercial operators, not individual travelers or expats. Use common sense — don't post about VPN use on Chinese social media (WeChat, Weibo) and you'll be fine.
What if Doppler stops working in China?
Try switching entry nodes (Tokyo → Singapore → Hong Kong) from the app. If all fail, the Doppler Telegram bot publishes emergency configuration updates and new server endpoints. Bot access works in China because Telegram's MTProto traffic is routed differently from app traffic; the bot stays reachable.
How does Doppler bypass the Great Firewall?
VLESS-Reality, the protocol Doppler uses, disguises its traffic as ordinary HTTPS to a legitimate-looking external site. The Chinese DPI (deep packet inspection) systems run by the GFW cannot distinguish a Doppler connection from a routine TLS handshake with, for example, Microsoft or Cloudflare. There is no recognizable VPN signature to block.
Do I need a VPN to use Google, Gmail, or YouTube in China?
Yes. Google, Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Drive, Photos, Calendar, and every Google service are blocked in mainland China. Doppler unblocks all of them. The block does not apply in Hong Kong or Macau, but if you travel between the mainland and either SAR you'll want the VPN ready for the mainland leg.
Why don't other VPNs work in China?
Most VPNs use OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2, or L2TP — protocols the GFW has fingerprinted and reliably blocks within seconds of a handshake. Some commercial VPNs add obfuscation, but they reuse a small number of server IPs that get IP-blocked in waves. Doppler's VLESS-Reality is purpose-built for environments where conventional VPNs fail.
