Discord turns on end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls by default

Discord makes encrypted calls the default
Discord has switched on end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls across its platform, giving all users private calls without any extra setup. The change means conversations can no longer be listened to by anyone else, including Discord itself.
The rollout marks a significant privacy update for the messaging platform, which serves hundreds of millions of users. Discord first introduced end-to-end encrypted voice and video calling in 2024, but on Monday said the protection is now standard for every voice and video call except those in stage channels.
“End-to-end Encryption is now standard for every voice and video call on Discord, outside of stage channels. No opt-in required,” Mark Smith, Discord’s vice president of core technologies, said in a blog post.
The move comes at a time when other major social platforms have been scaling back or declining to expand similar protections. Earlier this year, Meta shut off Instagram’s end-to-end encrypted messaging feature, while TikTok said it would not end-to-end encrypt user messages after becoming a U.S. company.
For Discord, the update applies automatically, with no action required from users. The company’s decision puts encrypted calling at the center of its service rather than treating it as an optional privacy feature.
Discord did not frame the rollout as a limited test or a premium feature. Instead, the company has made encryption the default for everyday voice and video communication, a notable shift for a platform that has become a core communication tool for gaming communities, online groups and other large user bases.
