OpenAI expands ChatGPT into personal finance with bank account connections

ChatGPT moves deeper into money management
OpenAI is adding personal finance tools to ChatGPT, giving users a way to connect bank and brokerage accounts and ask the chatbot questions about spending, portfolio performance, subscriptions and upcoming payments.
The features launched Friday in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the U.S. OpenAI said the product is powered through a partnership with Plaid, the financial connectivity service that links to more than 12,000 institutions, including Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express and Capital One.
Once accounts are connected, users will see a finance dashboard inside ChatGPT. OpenAI said the tool can help answer questions such as whether spending has changed recently or how to prepare financially to buy a house in the next five years.
Access starts from the sidebar by selecting “Get started” under the “Finances” option, or by typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a conversation. ChatGPT then walks users through linking accounts via Plaid.
The company said it plans to add support for Intuit soon, which could expand the tool’s ability to analyze issues such as the tax impact of a stock sale or the odds of getting approved for a credit card.
OpenAI said more than 200 million users already ask financial questions in ChatGPT each month. It also said its new GPT-5.5 model is better at reasoning with context, something the company considers important for finance-related queries. OpenAI said it worked with finance experts to build a benchmark for improving the model on personal finance questions.
The launch follows OpenAI’s acquisition last month of the team behind Hiro, a personal finance startup backed by Ribbit, General Catalyst and Restive. OpenAI said the team’s finance expertise was useful in bringing the product to market, though it did not say whether the feature was built entirely by that group.
Users can disconnect services at any time through Settings > Apps > Finances. OpenAI said synced data will be removed from ChatGPT within 30 days after disconnection, and users can also view and delete financial memories from the Finances page.
The move comes as AI companies increasingly build specialized tools for sensitive categories like health and finance, rather than relying on general-purpose chatbots alone. OpenAI has already introduced health-related tools, while Perplexity recently launched a financial research product of its own.
